Step 1: Open Chrome DevTools.
Go to the page you want to test. Then open DevTools using one of these shortcuts:
- Windows/Linux: Press Ctrl + Shift + I
- Mac: Press Cmd + Option + I
You can also right-click anywhere on the page and select “Inspect” from the context menu.
Step 2: Access network conditions.
Once DevTools is open, you need to find the Network conditions panel. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the DevTools window (not the browser’s main menu). Select “More tools,” then click “Network conditions.”
A new panel will appear at the bottom of DevTools. This is where you’ll change your user agent.
Step 3: Switch your user agent to Googlebot.
In the Network conditions panel, scroll down to the User agent section. Uncheck the box that says “Use browser default”.

Your user agent will remain set to Googlebot for this tab only. Opening a new tab resets back to your normal browser settings, so you won’t accidentally browse the web as Googlebot.
How to test Googlebot mobile in Chrome.
Since Google uses mobile-first indexing, testing the Googlebot mobile version of your pages is just as important as desktop testing.
Follow the same DevTools steps above, but select “Googlebot Smartphone” from the user agent dropdown. The smartphone user agent string looks like this:

Things to check specifically on mobile: responsive layout behaviour, tap targets that might overlap, content that loads differently on smaller screens, and any interstitials or popups that could block content from the crawler.
How to turn JavaScript off in Chrome for SEO testing.
Googlebot can render JavaScript, but it does so in a separate process after the initial crawl. This “two-wave” indexing means some content might be delayed or missed entirely. Testing with JavaScript disabled shows you what Googlebot sees on its first pass.
Here’s how to chrome turn javascript off in DevTools:
