The Devil Works Hard But OpenAI Works Harder! Introducing GPT-4

Just like acid wash jeans in the 90s, we can’t deny the chokehold AI has us in now. It’s everywhere – from our phones to our cars and even in our homes with smart speakers like Alexa and Google Home. And who could forget the talk of the town – ChatGPT?

ChatGPT (currently powered by GPT-3…or GPT-3.5, to be exact) does so much more than provide answers to simple questions. It could write a creative poem for you, a cover letter for a job or something in between. It’s smarter than you think – ChatGPT responses even passed the notorious U.S. Bar exam, as well as a medical licensing exam! We’re not kidding.

But why would the team behind it all, OpenAI, stop there?

The answer is…they didn’t.

In fact, they recently took things up a notch and introduced its “most capable and aligned model”, GPT4, which we’re going to unpack for you in this blog.

What Does GPT Actually Mean?

Plenty of us have been throwing around the term ‘ChatGPT’ in our everyday conversations, but did you know it stands for ‘Generative Pre-trained Transformer?’ Wow, that’s a bit of a mouthful!

Anyways, GPT is a fancy way of saying it’s an AI language model that can learn and evolve, a.k.a. ‘transform’ all on its own. It can do this with or without a human supervisor by studying training data and scouring the internet for info. With this knowledge, it can generate new text when given a prompt.

This is why GPT is super popular with Machine Learning researchers – it’s like having an AI that understands human language and can pretty much write like a human too! That’s because it combines Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Natural Language Generation (NLG) to really understand what we’re saying and how we say it.

The Evolution of GPT

Up until now, the most recent iteration of GPT was GPT-3, so why don’t we take a walk through memory lane and see just how far this mind-boggling technology has come?

GPT-1 (2018)

GPT-1 was the OG for AI that can read a text and answer questions about it. It was trained on an extensive dataset of Wikipedia articles, which was pretty damn cool at the time. However, GPT-1 struggled to do much beyond basic answers. It required a lot of data (which wasn’t always available) to produce responses.

GPT-2 (2019)

GPT-2 could handle ten times more data than GPT-1 and produce more detailed results for things like translations, summaries, and answering questions. It also enhanced the integration of human AI in NLP and improved the automation of customer service and chatbots.

GPT-3 (2020)

Although ChatGPT only became available in 2022, you might be surprised that GPT-3 has been around since 2020.

GPT-3 was a considerable upgrade from its predecessors, with a massive 175 billion datasets! It’s a lot more advanced when it comes to Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Natural Language Generation (NLG), so it can understand human language and even generate realistic text. And get this – it only needs a little input from the user.

The possibilities with GPT-3 are endless! It can do all sorts of cool stuff, from generating code snippets to making memes. But it’s not just for fun and games – it’s got serious applications too, like analysing speech patterns. How cool is that?!

GPT-4 (2023)

Just when we thought the world of GPT couldn’t get even crazier, OpenAI announced GPT-4, which, according to co-founder Sam Altman, is their “most capable and aligned model yet”. Read on to find out what’s new with GPT-4!

What’s New in GPT-4

Each new development in GPT gets more advanced and capable of handling more complex prompts, and GPT-4 is no exception. Here’s what you can expect with GPT-4:

Multimodal Inputs

One of the most incredible features of GPT-4 is that it can actually respond to images!

For example, let’s say you show GPT-4 a photo of some ingredients in your fridge. It can analyse the image and suggest recipes based on what it sees. It’s like having your very own personal recipe developer! If only it could do the cooking for us too…

But that’s not all – GPT-4 can also write captions and descriptions based on all sorts of images and even distinguish between different coloured clothing.

Higher Word Processing Capability

GPT-4 can process up to 25,000 words – that’s about eight times as many as ChatGPT currently! ChatGPT’s millions of users have been asking it to do all sorts of things – like writing poems, marketing copy, computer code and (to many professors’ dismay) essays.

Handling more text with GPT-4 is huge for applications like language translation, where larger volumes of text need to be processed quickly and accurately.

Stronger Memory

Modern GPT models learn from millions of web pages and books. Still, when they chat with people, they can only keep a limited amount of information in mind. GPT-3.5 could only remember about 8,000 words or 4-5 pages of a book.

To compare, GPT-4 can remember up to 50 pages of text, or about 64,000 words. This means you can keep the conversation going for much longer, continually expanding on ideas using the initial information from your first prompt.

Handling More Complex Tasks

According to recent demonstrations, GPT-4 can handle more complex tasks. For example, one person was amazed when they fed GPT-4 a bunch of tax codes. It quickly came up with the correct deduction – something that even they couldn’t figure out. It shows how powerful AI can be when crunching and making sense of complex information.

It can also produce more human-like responses to customer inquiries, which is incredibly useful for services and eCommerce businesses.

More Multilingual

GPT-4 is making progress to accommodate non-English speaking users. It can now answer thousands of multiple-choice questions in 26 different languages, including Italian, Ukrainian, and Korean. It’s good at Romance languages like Spanish and German, but it can handle others well, too.

Advanced Coding

We know coders have been playing around with GPT-3’s coding capabilities. Still, GPT-4 has made things even more efficient. Some enthusiasts on Twitter showed off how GPT-4 can make whole video games in just a few minutes right in their browsers. Using GPT-4, a user made a version of the game Snake without even knowing JavaScript.

When Can I Use GPT-4?

For those of you itching to try out GPT-4, you’re unfortunately going to have to wait a little longer. While the current ChatGPT is available for everyone to use, the public can’t test GPT-4 yet.

However, if you’re a ChatGPT fan, consider upgrading to ChatGPT Plus. GPT-4 will first be available exclusively to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, who pay $20USD a month for premium access to the service. Keep in mind that at the moment, GPT-4 has a cap of around 100 messages every four hours.

Room For Improvement

Even though GPT-4 is pretty impressive, it’s not perfect – but who is, anyway? Not even Beyoncé!

One important thing to keep in mind, even with GPT-4, is that it doesn’t always know about things that have happened after September 2021 (the cut off date for the data it was trained on).

It can also sometimes make silly mistakes or be too trusting of false information – kind of like falling for a fake news story. Users should always double check the facts in case of inaccuracies from GPT.

Considering that Microsoft invested $10 BILLION in OpenAI in January though, it’s safe to say that OpenAI’s GPT technology holds a lot of potential. Even Spotify has hopped on the OpenAI train – using the technology for its very own AI DJ, which you can read about in our blog.

And the best part?

GPT will only keep getting better (and more human-like) over time.
