The single biggest shift in your SEO priorities for 2027 is this: ranking first no longer guarantees you get quoted. Ahrefs analysed 863,000 SERPs and four million AI Overview URLs in March 2026 and found only 37.1% of cited pages also ranked in Google’s top 10, down from 76% in July 2025.
That one number reframes everything. Google is pulling answers from a much wider pool than the blue links, which means there’s more room for smaller brands to get in front of buyers than there’s been in a decade. Here’s where to put your effort, and what to stop paying for.
Quick answer.
- Citations are the new rankings. Fewer than four in ten AI Overview citations now come from the top 10 organic results, so page-one obsession alone leaves visibility on the table
- Brand mentions beat backlinks. Across 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.66–0.71, compared with roughly 0.19–0.22 for backlinks
- Zero-click is the default. 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024
- Your measurement is broken. Search Console’s generative AI report shows impressions, not clicks, so sessions alone will make good work look like failure
- Product data is now agent food. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol means AI agents buy based on structured merchant data, not your homepage copy
What the SEO trends for 2027 are built on.
Three things changed between 2025 and now, and everything else follows from them.
- AI answers went mainstream. Google confirmed at I/O 2026 that AI Mode has reached 1 billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch. AI Overviews sit above a huge share of informational results.
- Clicks got scarcer. SparkToro’s analysis of Similarweb clickstream data found 68.01% of Google searches in January–April 2026 ended without a click to the open web, compared with 60.45% in 2024, the fastest acceleration in a decade.
- Google started reporting on it. Search Console now has a generative AI performance report and an opt-out toggle. Sites that opt out “will not receive traffic or impressions from our generative AI features.”
That same SparkToro dataset found AI Mode accounted for just 0.34% of searches in the panel studied. Classic search results still carry the volume. The SEO trends 2027 rewards aren’t about abandoning Google; they’re about being visible in both places at once.
SEO priority #1: get cited, not just ranked.
Top of the list of SEO priorities for 2027: being quoted inside an AI answer is now a distinct outcome from ranking, and it needs its own workflow.
The mechanism is query fan-out. Ask Google a question, and it silently expands it into a cluster of sub-queries, then assembles an answer from whatever best resolves each one. That’s why citations now come from well beyond the top 10. A page that nails one narrow sub-question can get quoted even if it ranks 30th for the head term.
What to do about it:
- Map the sub-questions buyers ask around each money keyword, then give each one its own clearly-headed section or its own page
- Front-load a 40–60-word direct answer under every H2, before you expand
- Add specifics that AI systems can attribute, such as dates, prices, named products, and original numbers from your own data
- Audit monthly: run your ten highest-value queries through AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity and record whether you appear

SEO priority #2: build brand mentions, not just backlinks.
This is the biggest budget reallocation on the list.
Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands in December 2025 and measured what correlates with appearing in ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. Branded web mentions scored 0.664 for ChatGPT, 0.709 for AI Mode and 0.656 for AI Overviews. Backlinks landed around 0.19–0.22. YouTube mentions came in strongest of all, at roughly 0.71–0.74.
Correlation isn’t causation, and Google is blunt that chasing fake mentions isn’t helpful and breaks spam policies. But the direction is clear enough to act on: earned presence across the web now does what link building used to do alone.
So shift a slice of your link budget toward:
- Digital PR that gets your brand named in articles, whether or not a link comes with it
- Video. A YouTube channel that actually answers buyer questions is now an SEO asset, not a nice-to-have
- Founder and specialist commentary in industry publications, podcasts and LinkedIn
- Reddit, forums and review platforms where your category gets discussed unprompted
- Reclaiming unlinked mentions, and making sure your brand name, description and category are consistent everywhere
SEO priority #3: make your expertise verifiable.
Google’s quality systems still underpin its AI features, and experience remains the differentiator that’s hardest to fake.
Generic advice is now free and infinite. What no model can generate is your team’s install data, your before-and-after client numbers, your photographs of a job in progress, or a named practitioner with credentials someone can check.
Practical version for 2027:
- Put real author bios on content, with qualifications, licence numbers or association memberships
- Publish original data. Even a survey of 200 customers or an analysis of your own last 500 jobs is more citable than another roundup
- Show the working: photos, screenshots, test results, methodology notes
- Keep an About page and an Organisation schema entry that clearly state who you are, where you operate and what you do

SEO priority #4: nail the fundamentals AI still runs on.
There’s a lot of noise about special AI markup. Google’s own documentation is refreshingly direct: “You don’t need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search (including its generative AI capabilities),” and “structured data isn’t required for generative AI search”.
Google requires that a page be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. That’s on-page work, such as title tags, heading structure, internal links, clean URLs, page speed, and crawlability. The unglamorous stuff is the entry ticket.
Structured data still earns its place for rich results and machine-readable clarity, particularly for Organisation, Article, Product, LocalBusiness, and FAQ. Just don’t buy the idea that a new schema type is a shortcut to AI answers. Our on-page SEO guide covers the checklist worth working through page by page.
SEO priority #5: get your product data agent-ready.
If you sell anything online, this is the one competitors are sleeping on.
Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol as “a new open standard for agentic commerce that works across the entire shopping journey,” built with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, and backed by Best Buy, Mastercard, Stripe and Visa. Alongside it came dozens of new data attributes in Merchant Centre designed for easy discovery in the conversational commerce era. Things like answers to product questions, compatible accessories and substitutes.
Translation: an AI agent choosing between your product and a competitor’s reads your feed, not your brand story.
Retail and e-commerce SEO strategy 2027 priorities:
- Fill every available Merchant Centre attribute, including the new conversational ones
- Answer product questions in structured fields, not only in page copy
- List compatible accessories and substitutes so agents can bundle and recommend
- Consider activating a Business Agent in Merchant Centre so shoppers can chat with your brand on Search
- Keep pricing, stock and shipping data accurate to the hour
SEO priority #6: fix your measurement before your traffic.
Search Console’s generative AI report gives you impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates, but not clicks. Meanwhile, zero-click keeps climbing. If your board reports on organic sessions alone, rising influence will read as declining performance.
Rebuild the scorecard around four things:
- AI visibility. Citation and mention share across AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini for your priority queries
- Generative AI impressions. Tracked separately in Search Console, trended monthly
- Branded search volume. The cleanest proxy for whether zero-click exposure is landing
- Assisted revenue. Organic and direct conversions, not last-click sessions
Set that baseline now. You can’t argue for SEO budget in 2027 with 2023 metrics.
SEO priorities 2027: what to deprioritise.
Not everything deserves a slot. Based on what’s actually correlating with visibility, ease off:
- Bulk low-quality link buying. The correlation data doesn’t support it, and the risk hasn’t gone anywhere.
- Publishing volume for its own sake. Thin, commodity articles are exactly what AI answers replace. Google asks for a “unique point of view.”
- llms.txt files and AI-specific markup. Google has said plainly they’re not needed.
- Chasing keyword rank alone. Position one is still valuable – it’s just no longer the whole scoreboard.
- Waiting for certainty. Australian business AI adoption sat at 12% overall in 2024–25, with large businesses at 35% and small businesses around 11%. The gap between early and late movers is widening now, not in 2028.
Your SEO strategy 2027 roadmap: first 90 days.
A workable SEO strategy 2027 sequence, in the order we’d run it:
- Days 1–30: baseline. Audit AI citations for your 20 highest-value queries. Turn on the Search Console generative AI report. Record branded search volume. Fix indexing and snippet eligibility issues.
- Days 31–60: close the gaps. Rewrite your top 10 commercial pages with an answer-first structure and query fan-out coverage. Add verifiable author credentials. Clean up the Organisation and Product schema. E-commerce: complete your Merchant Centre attributes.
- Days 61–90: build presence. Launch a digital PR push targeting named mentions. Publish one piece of original data. Start a video series answering your ten most common sales questions. Reclaim unlinked mentions.
Then repeat quarterly. The brands winning in AI search aren’t running a different playbook – they’re running this one more often.
Start with the audit, not the content calendar.
Work through the SEO priorities for 2027 above in order, and you’ll notice they share a theme: earn the answer, don’t just chase the click. The businesses that’ll win search next year are the ones treating citation share as a KPI today, and most of your competitors still aren’t measuring it.
